The PBS travel writer has gone out of his way to squash the convention that one person can’t make a difference. Mr. Steves has financed a television program and continues to do speaking engagements to inspire conversation about marijuana laws and policy. Rick Steves has also publicly criticized the local media for stifling the conversation regarding marijuana prohibition. ”Washington State Institute for Public Policy estimates that the state could save $7.6 million a year if the law were changed, based on the 11,553 misdemeanor arrests made in 2007.”
